Oat bran VS Large flake oats

Hello! I’m a nursing student and one of my instructors told our class that oat bran is not good for people, but they give it to the seniors in LTC facilities because it’s cheap. She suggested large flake oats (the ones you cook, not quick oats) are the healthier option.

I’ve been trying to find some information comparing the two but am struggling to find comparisons of large flake oats, as usually the comparison is done with instant.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! 😊

Answer

Oat bran is the outer layer of the oat groat. It sits beneath the indelible hull. It’s actually healthier if you consider the fact it is the ‘whole grain’, rather than the refined oat. It contains more fibre and protein than regular oats, as well as less calories.

Oat groats and steel cut oats naturally contain small amounts of oat bran. Oat bran is probably the healthiest composition of the whole oat.
