Origins of breaking fasts with juice?

I’ve read a few older books that advise breaking fasts with juice which seems contrary to avoiding the dangers of refeeding syndrome. Does anyone know where the origins of breaking fasts with juice or fruit came from?

Answer

The thinking is “Fruit juices and fruits contain water content and are easily digested” - which is true. There’s a lot of nutrients in fruit and it’s pretty easy on the stomach… BUT this ignores sugar/carbs and the insulin response.

A lot of older and even current advice doesn’t seem to value or understand the role of hormones, the gut microbiome, etc.
