Peeing at night while fasting…it’s a good sign!

Just wanted to share. Been IM for maybe 6 months. Prior to this Id never wake up to pee at night. Now I pee at least twice per night and I hate it. I’ve cheated with a midnight snack three times. Every cheat time I’ve slept thru the night. To me this means that when fasting your body really is tearing down body fat for glucose with excess water as a byproduct. Anyone else experiencing the same??? Knowing lots of sleep disturbances mean weight loss helps.

“To me this means that when fasting your body really is tearing down body fat for glucose with excess water as a byproduct”… bro, just no what the hell

Answer

I’d bet that you are burning glycogen which is freeing the extra water that it was stored with: https://www.puregym.com/blog/water-weight-what-is-it-and-why-does-it-matter/

Answer

Going on any kind of diet seems to produce more liquid waste. This is the main reason that early stages of dieting involve much larger weight loss than can otherwise be accounted for. Another mechanism (other than those mentioned elsewhere in the thread) involves reduced sodium intake.

Having said that, I have noticed that any carbohydrate reduction produces disproportionately large losses.

The down side of all this is that weight goes back on disappointingly easily once you stop.

Answer

My take is that after a late and/or carb-friendly meal:

The two together promote sweet(er) dreams.

Take away the cheat/late/carby meal and it’s the opposite – digestion is over sooner, any water you drink seems to flow right through you and cortisol is elevated, ergo poor(er) sleep.

The only time you ever have water in your system is from metabolic water but that doesn’t cause you to pee more. Metabolic water is stored in your fat, your body is 60-70% water right? So of course if you’re over 30% body fat your body has even more excess water, I believe the longest someone went on pure metabolic water was 12 days?Maybe someone set it higher but don’t try it.

That was just a little thing to clear things up from your other comments but if you drink a substantial amount more water or tea it’s going to make you urinate more. Maybe you have a small bladder or maybe you’re just not used to that much water. Either way it’s harmless.

I don’t know the reason, but I noticed the same thing with me.. I pee more when I’m fasting and during the times I’m losing weight. Not sure if I’m drinking more water when I am hungry but trying to delay eating. I always told myself that I’m peeing away fat..I also tell myself that my cholesterol levels are higher because I’m breaking down fat when I’m dieting and I don’t need to go on the cholesterol drugs my doctor keeps telling me to go on.

I’ve been drinking a ton of water. Most days more than a gallon. So I think I’m really hydrated. Was probably dehydrated before as I drank only diet soda. I get up twice at night and pee a lot. I thought it was because of my zero gravity bed. Am losing really slowly so don’t think it is fat break down.

Answer

Initially you’ll void a lot more due to glycogen stores being used but you’re also referring to metabolic hydration in which animals with stored fat release small amounts of water into the bloodstream in order to remain hydrated (think typically bears and whales). It’s an insignificant amount.

I’m an old dude and used to pee a LOT at night, 1-2 litres a night for about a week when I started a low oxalate diet (try waking up 12 times a night). I managed it by cutting out coffee and not drinking anything after 4pm. It’s taken me almost 2 years of real food, IF, keto and exercise/weights to get to the stage where I might pee once a night.

If nocturia remains an issue I’d take a good look at diet. Monitor for elevated BP with a sphygmomanometer, maybe even get a glucose and uric acid testing kit but otherwise expect an increase in urine output when fasting.
