Do most Americans take in more than 100-150mg of Choline per day?
Is it possible that Betaine from bread can make up for this deficiency?
The official sites all state that you need 550mg of Choline per day as a male, and 450mg per day as a female. And, for breastfeeding, you need 550mg per day.
I don’t think the average breastfeeding woman on this planet gets that much Choline per day.
So, what’s going on here?
Are Betaine and Folic Acid having a sparing effect on Choline requirements and reducing the amount we need?
Hey! Yes, it looks like betaine spares choline under some circumstances.
I take choline, but have had the same question. Like, are people really eating several eggs or liver a day? Especially these days…
From this article:
betaine spares choline for homocysteine remethylation
betaine cannot be turned back into choline
A low intake of either folic acid or choline will increae the need for the other.
