Pork crackling, are they too good to be true for a source of protein as a ‘snack’?

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could answer me the age old question in regards to pork crackling chips: are they too good to be true in terms of protein intake?

For context, I am trying to make a list of ‘protein-based’ snacks due to me now taking my dieting and weight training more seriously. This list is more for taking something to work that as a quick snack that is still benefitting me in some way in terms of a good source of protein. These are just in case I have no time to whip up a meal the night before. Based on my age, weight and goals, I’ll need at least 170g of protein per day to stay on track

I bought these from Coles (I am Australian by the way) and saw it’s ingredients, no MSG, no artificial flavouring and protein as a reason to try them. This is the specific brand of crackling I bought. I am aware of the amino acids and gelatine that make up a pork cracklings, however is this brand any different or should I avoid it at all costs. If anyone has any suggestions on protein snacks that aren’t your typical ‘protein bars’, don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments thanks

Answer

Crackling is tasty but it’s fairly low quality protein. Just a big pile of skin, with a heap of fat and sodium for the protein.

Boiled eggs are super easy. Into the saucepan, boil then 5.5 minutes and they’re done. I have them with a tiny bit of soy sauce or with some dry spices (cumin or paprika are my favourites).

I read somewhere that pork cracklings in general are considered highly processed and therefore not good for you.

However, when I went on a two year long paleo diet back in the days, i used to snack on these, without any problems regarding weight and feeling awesome.

These days I keep my weight in check by regular exercise and eating as clean as possible. I find these nice for snacking, as they quickly satisfy cravings in contrast to potato chips etc.

They’re amazing with hummus btw.
