Preparing for my first 5 day fast

Planning on doing a 5-day fast. I’ve read quite a bit from Dr. Longo and Dr. Fung, and listened to numerous podcasts from other doctors/PhD’s. Considering the following to help or assist with the fast, and looking for any other advice!

  1. Having an electrolyte supplement that will give me potassium, magnesium and sodium. The limits I’ve read on these are about 2600 mg; 300 mg and up to 5000 mg, per day, respectively.
  2. As for blood sugar: if it drops below 45, I’m supposed to break the fast. And if my ketones go over 7.0, I should end it then too. (It might seem like overkill, but I think I might test these things during my first fast, since I am a ‘push through it’ kind of person)
  3. I’ll continue to do light exercise too - walking, some weights, etc.
  4. And the basics: I’ll drink black coffee, water and tea, along with that electrolyte supplement. I’ve read that Dr. Fung also says to include bone broth, but thinking I’ll use either that or the electrolyte supplement.

I am doing weekly 24 hour fasts now, and will get in 1 or 2 (36)-hour fasts in as well beforehand, just to prep mentally a little. (Thanks in advance!)

Answer

You’ll do fine. Just drink when you feel like it. I don’t think the supplements are really needed but either way, good luck!

Fyi I’ve done 5 day fasts for 6 months now. Lost 60 lbs. I have about 20 lbs to go.

Answer

Your mileage may vary, but if it’s your first prolonged fast, I would skip the weights and do only walking. Every time I have gotten too fatigued to finish a five day fast, it was because I exercised too much.
