Protein and fat content in Oat milk: not enough for a dairy substitute?

I read that oat milk is very environment-friendly and easy to make at home. But it is not very nutritious in terms of protein and (essential)fats. How do you solve this? Or do you even solve this?

(PS: I can’t seem to get any commercial oatmilk brands where I live)

Answer

Oat milk is fortified with some nutrients (vitamin D, calcium, B12), but does have less than milk. That being said, you can adjust for this by getting protein and fat from other sources in your diet (meat, beans, quinoa, nuts&seeds, lentils, hummus, protein powder)… milk isn’t a dietary requirement if you don’t want it to be!

Answer

People who buy oat milk do so not for the actual nutritional benefits of oat milk, they just want to avoid buying cow milk which involves lots of animal abuse or they simply are allergic and they just like its taste in coffee or food. So, technically speaking, there aren’t many nutritional benefits in oat milk, it’s just a tiny amount of oats mixed with water. If you are a vegan or on a plant based diet you should look for other foods for protein and fats such as beans, chickpeas, tofu, peas, lentils, seitan, nuts, avocados… etc, and as another person already mentioned here, neither cow milk nor any other plant milk is a dietary requirement.

This article has some interesting comparisons of oat milk alternatives and address environmental concerns. Oat milk is only better really in terms of calories. Oats in general are higher in phytic acids and cause major GI upset for some people. Milk alternatives really aren’t “better” especially if you look at nutritional values and environmental impact. https://nutrition.org/going-nuts-about-milk-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-plant-based-milk-alternatives/

Answer

I think 1g protein per serving of oat milk should be enough. I just drink 3 gallons per day to get the required amount.

Really wish protein and essential fats were easier to come by tbh but go green or go home right?
