Protein percentage question

Hello, I have what I hope to be a simple question, yet I don’t know how to find this on the internet myself.

Let’s say I am buying some chicken crumble, and it advertises as 17% protein. Does this mean, if I bought 100 lb, it would contain 17 lb of protein? If that’s not what it means, then what does 17% mean in this example?

A more specific example, I am trying to throw together an insect chow recipe, and the common wisdom is 20-25% protein for this insect. I don’t know what that means… because, when I look at various potential ingredients, they always list protein in grams, not a %… which would also be off, because I’m sure the insect’s %DV of nutrients is not the same as a human’s.

So… if I want to whip up a mash of sorts, and have 25% protein, does that mean 25% of the weight of the mash is protein?

Thanks!

Answer

If the chicken crumble is meant for human consumption then the 17% should be the percentage of the recommended daily value of protein provided by a serving of the chicken crumble. The grams of protein should be on the nutrition label. Without seeing the packaging this is only my best guess.

Insects definitely have different rdv’s than humans. Again this is only my best guess, but I would say you are correct that 20-25% of the total weight of the food should be protein. This sub probably isn’t great for figuring out the nutritional needs of non-humans. You might try /r/AskVet or /r/insects.
