Protein requirement based on body weight or Lean muscle mass ?

Hi, sorry if this sounds like an idiotic question – I was just wondering if the conventional protein requirement, upward of 1.6g/kg of body-weight IIRC, applies more accurately for lean muscle mass rather than body weight if the person is overweight or has higher fat% ? That is, protein consumption of 1.6g/kg of lean muscle mass rather than body weight ? If I am mistaken, why is the whole body weight relevant for protein consumption guideline rather than lean muscle mass ?

Thanks!

You have a great question as my doctor says that I don’t eat enough protein and I have never been concerned enough to figure it out, how much I need anyway, but as an American we don’t know grams or kilograms, maybe send this out in pounds and ounces and you might get a little more information. I will be learning right along with you!

Answer

The standard ratios recommended online assume you’re within a healthy BMI. For example if you weighed 300 lbs and are very fat, you don’t need to be eating 300 plus grams of protein per day. Hitting around 200 grams a day is ideal if not more than ideal for 99% of the adult population.
