PSA: Be careful when breaking a water fast

I’m still figuring things out as I go. Online literature says to be careful when breaking a prolonged fast (anything longer than 72 hours). Start with broth and cooked veggies, work your way back to normal food. Avoid heavy greasy food for a day or two.

I disregarded this advice and broke a 2 week fast with a bunch of greasy fast food cuz I was eager to celebrate. Since I didn’t immediately see any negative side effects I thought maybe the advice about breaking fasts didn’t apply to me. Turns out it does, it just takes longer than I expected. A full day after breaking my fast I got food poisoning type symptoms. Bad. Since it was a day after breaking my fast I assumed it wasn’t fasting related and thought I actually had food poisoning.

Later on I do another two week fast. That ended a little over a day ago. I break the fast with greasy fast food and a lot of it. And same issue. A day later I feel like throwing up, stomach cramps and diarrhea.

I have noticed do not however have these symptoms if I follow the conventional wisdom on breaking fasts (breaking fast with broth and cooked vegetables, avoiding heavy carbs and fat for a day or two and working your way back to regular food carefully).

Lesson learned: Break your fast carefully - just because you don’t immediately have side effects doesn’t mean you won’t have side effects.

This has happened to me too. Once I had been on day 5 I qasnt planning on breaking it but I was made to escorr my aunt to an event where me not eating made her uncomfortable. I ended up breaking with some very bad foods and only 3 hours later the worst reaction I felt so sick but it took me some time to realize it was because of how I broke my fast.
