Question about fasting body fat loss, body composition and muscle building

Have a ton of weight to lose and I think I can do 4 day fast and 3 day eating due to life stuff(3 days to break fast gently so really one day full eating). I don’t know how long it will take me to get to my ideal weight but when should I care about muscle building? I do use my tonal almost everyday and it is pretty good but I also understand how i am not really building any muscles while fasting.

So couple of questions:

  1. Since I am not building a lot of muscles or at all while on my fasting journey, at what point of my journey should i do more keto/OMAD so that i have protein for muscle building? Would it be at the weight I want to maintain or earlier than that?
  2. I am assuming whatever weight I do lose will be mostly fat (i understand some muscle may be lost initial day) but I am curious how my body composition becomes as I lose weight. Lets say i am 100 lbs(easy math) 30% body fat at start which means 70% “other stuff”. As I lose weight and my body fat becomes 25% and the “other stuff” is 75%, did i “gain” anything like muscles or it is they count more due to the weight and fat loss? I would assume muscle % won’t decrease as much as fat% so i am technically more muscular then?

Thanks!

Answer

Yes, you will lose mostly fat when u reach ketosis as the body uses fat for energy source in that case. You will maintain almost all of your muscle mass due to the spike of the HGH(human growth hormone) that is responsible for aging, muscle mass and losing bodyfat(maintaining body comp). It acts like a defensive mechanism to prevent muscle loss in a way , so your body comp after the fasting period and fat loss will depend on your sculptured body under the layers of fat and water retention

Answer

Lifting weights after a fast is extra beneficial due to the increased growth hormone levels you get from fasting. I’m already fairly muscular so my top priority is fat loss, so I’m just straight up extended fasting right now.

But earlier this year I did a month of rolling 3:1 where I’d fast 3 days, do a full body workout on the evening of day 3, eat for a day, then repeat. It felt absolutely amazing, I swear I had more strength and energy than before my fast! Highly recommend giving it a shot for anyone looking to gain muscle while losing weight. Though you’ll likely need to wait a week before you can start working out, so that you can get fat adapted.
