Question about glucose on 72 hour fast

So I’m in the middle of a 72 hour water fast (including black coffee + tea), I’m on hour 44ish, and i’ve been regularly checking my blood sugar and it’s consistently been 103-106 regardless of time of day. Today I ran a 5k at the gym and did a little bit of lifting, so I assume with that much activity i’d be in ketosis by now. I’m not diabetic and typically i’ve always ran a bit on the lower end of blood sugar. Is this typical? if so what’s the mechanism that could be causing this?

Answer

When you exercise hard the liver squeezes glucose into the body.
Also in the morning cortisol can drive the sugar up.

Have you checked your ketones? They are usually more telling.
100-ish is a bit high for fasting, maybe it’s a bad batch of strips? Have you tried them before fasting to create a baseline?

Answer

Exercise while fasting boosts my blood sugars but the short answer is every body is different. I also run on the low end (73-75 while on normal eating schedule). When I hit day 4/5, I’m consistently \~42-48. But don’t take my numbers as a comparison because we’re all different - instead focus on how your body feels

Also, it takes my body quite a few days to get into ketosis. Even on a ketogenic OMAD nutrition plan with a fairly strict never more than 30 total carbs, never more than 20 net carbs and doing that for \~5 days - I STILL don’t feel deep ketosis until a couple of days into a fast. You might just have to experiment and see if your body is a little slower triggering and work around that

Good luck!
