QUESTION: Why most daily supplements carry many more vitamins than necessary?

For example: the recommended daily amount of vitamin B-12 for adults is around 2.5 micrograms. But most of B-12 suplements pills have like 100 times more or even 1000 times more. And label says to take it daily. So that’s taking a lot more than necessary every day.

Why? Someone please help me understand.

Answer

The vast majority of vitamins, being water-soluble, are well-tolerated at far in excess of their actual RDI. Consequently, it makes sense to err on the side of a minimum dosage which would be therapeutic in cases of deficiency, yet harmless otherwise.
