Hello everybody at r/fasting. I want to start fasting but I’m a bit paranoid about refeeding syndrome. Is there any rules to go by to avoid it happening? Crazy that eating too much after a fast can cause death.
Almost died of refeeding as a semi anorexic athlete at 13… doctors told me I needed to drink more salt when I drank water cuz I was diluting my blood with so much water & it happened after I had half a donut after a hard workout (they also advised I obviously eat more - had very low fat reserves unlike now lol) sooo keep up with electolytes & do not eat carbs after your fast for a day or two to be safe, start with things easy on ur stomach & protein…I usually do kimchi then an egg then maybe a bit of chicken or something…usually by next day I’m fine to eat normal in smaller portions (things like potatoes but I’d still avoid like intense sugar likely) …if u start throwing up immediately go to ER this was my first symptom then I went unconscious very quickly afterward luckily I was with my parents who drove me & carried me into ER…it is extremely rare but def take precautions & don’t get cocky. I’ve done 5 day fasts as an adult with no problem, I personally would not go past 7-10 days without medical supervision & testing due to being a bit paranoid about refeeding myself…good luck!!
