Rolling 72s and Keto for over a week.. why are my keto strips still negative?

I’ve lost 18 lbs in 8 days. Not carbs at all. Fasting for 3 days, then eating bacon in the morning and fasting for 3 days and so on. For some reason I still don’t have pink keto strips. Is this a big deal?

Well, if you lose weight and don’t feel like you are close to a coma, it probably means that you are in ketosis, so you don’t really need the keto strips. When you stop eating for prolonged periods there are about two things that can happen: either you enter ketosis and start burning body fat for almost all your energy expenditure, either you enter ketoacidosis (that happens when you are diabetic usually) which means that you will feel like shit and be close to a coma followed by death eventually if left untreated. Since it is pretty obvious that you weren’t in the second case I mentioned, I would say that you were in ketosis and the keto strips simply failed. To be honest, there is no need to use them anyway, because if you stop eating for 72h, unless you are dead or dying, there is no chance you are not in ketosis.

How experienced is your body with ketosis? There are different kinds of ketones, and the strips only test for one kind (alpha-hydroxybutyrate). You produce this initially, but after a while in ketosis, the body switches to making beta-hydroxybutyrate, which cab only be tested by a blood meter. If your body is really experienced with getting into ketosis, it can just skip the former altogether and get right into producing the latter.

You’re doing great, trust the process and look at the results on the scale. Keto strips are a waste of money.

I have been on keto for 8 years after a certain period of time the strips don’t turn purple. Ketones released in urine means those are excess ketones your body expells because it is not yet effecient at using ketones for fuel. It’s either your body got really efficient at using ketones for fuel. The strips are bad. A more accurate way of measuring is a blood ketone meter after fasting for 3 days my ketones are extermely high but it still won’t show in the strips.
