Shift work and extended water fasts

I’m a nurse that works 90% graveyard shifts. I’ve completed a 7 day fast a couple years ago basically as an exercise in self discipline, however I was working day shift at the time. Ive definitely experienced a drop in willpower since becoming a creature of the night. I’m wanting to do another extended fast.

Any shift workers out there successfully complete extended fasts?

Answer

I did three days water fasting followed by about a month of PSMF. I was working 1400-0230 or 1400-2230 with a lot of overtime and schoolwork. I think it’s doable if you can avoid too much brain fog but if you can start with a few days off that would probably help a lot.

Yes. Paramedic here. Getting through the first 48 hours is the hardest. I always thought starting on my off-days at home wouldn’t work well because I would be at home with nothing to do, and would boredom-eat, but it actually worked out great. Willpower is a finite resource and declines throughout the day, faster on more stressful days. So it’s best to start an extended fast on a couple consecutive days when there are going to be comparatively few demands on your willpower, like patients or bosses or patients families.
