Smell?

I started less carb with 18:6 IF this past week and a few days ago I noticed strong BO from mainly my armpits. I haven’t changed my daily hygiene routine other than now applying more deodorant each day since noticing. Could this be a side effect of IF? Has anyone else experienced this?

Answer

Weight loss can be smelly business! Dietary changes often mean consuming more seasonings to make bland foods more appealing, eating more vegetables often means increasing allium intake (garlic, onion, etc.), a healthier mindset often leads people to take new vitamins or supplements, and certain diets (high protein, low carb) change the body chemistry by burning alternate fuel sources and can cause notable scent changes. Plus, regular exercise increases overall frequency of sweating, not just when you’re exercising (your body just learns to get more efficient at cooling itself). Lastly, fat doesn’t just “melt” in your body- it has to go somewhere. The body eliminates it like any other waste: through urine, feces, sweat, and even expelled through your breath. It shouldn’t have anything to do with fasting itself, but if you’re losing weight or changing your diet, those are the likely culprits.
