So when you’re in the fasted stated your body goes into ketosis, i.e. pumping out ketone the hormone that lets it convert stored fat into glycogen for your brain. Your stored fat will last you for a while depending on how much fat you actually have stored. I think the typical average is like 66 days for a woman or 53 days for a man. Obviously if you’re way overweight you can definitely last longer. The longest recorded ever was Angus Barbieri who lasted 382 days or just over a year, under medical supervision.

Starvation is the period when you run out of fat stores to maintain the state of ketosis for the creation of glycogen and thus the body MUST use protein.

This is a good point to highlight how that typically fasting is relatively muscle sparing. You will lose some muscle but overall it’s mostly fat reserves being used. The switch over to muscle catabolism would be one of the markers for entering starvation.

Obviously this is just my knowledge through various books and internet research and there is probably some more nuanced info/definitions from someone in the medical field. But It should help you better understand what is going on in your body.

Depending on how much you weigh and how lean you are then you need to be more careful with fasting.

The main issue for extended fasting is usually electrolytes which is why you see that talked about and pinned everywhere.
