Stomach/Digestive Issues with IF?

36/m here. On and off the IF train over the last 4 to 5 years. Starting and stopping. Starting weight way back when was 235. Now I’m currently at 195. Over the last 5 months have gotten back on board aiming for 20:4.

I do start out my morning with coffee and some creamer (so a dirty fast) but seems to work for me. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Beyond that after I get off work at 3 pm, I will start eating. Fruit/veggies, etc. Then my dinner. Typically don’t eat after 7 pm then except on cheat days (weekends).

This go around with IF I seem to be having more stomach/digestive issues. Alot of nausea, bloating, stomach feeling tight, maybe some constipation from time to time as well. I guess it could be GERD, IBS, or an ulcer but guessing it probably has something to do with IF.

Last night I had a steak, frozen veggies, cottage cheese, and mashed potatoes. All normal portions. However afterwards felt very bloated in the stomach and tight in the stomach.

Just weird as I dont remember all these issues when I did IF previously.

So a few things come to mind that make a difference for me, and may affect you too.

  1. anxiety can cause this. If you are anxious about fasting, weight loss, etc, it can have this effect.

  2. coffee can cause some of these symptoms too - including increased anxiety. Coffee on an empty stomach is a no-no for me in the morning because I get the jitters, and nauseous etc.

Even if that’s not your problem, some gentle laxatives can help with it. Gasex is good for gas and bloat. Colace is good for stool softening. Or for faster results a little “smooth move” tea can get things going. Don’t overuse.

Honestly though, I’d recommend laying off the morning coffee. Switch to green tea for a while.
