Struggling

Hi.. I keep attempting to do the 16/8 fast and I can’t seem to make it past 3 days.. I just enjoy my tea with milk in am and this is difficult to kick.. I’m usually pretty good with the no eating after 7 or 8 pm.. it’s just that darn am tea lol.. and no I won’t drink black.. Any tips or reasonable suggestions.. Do you think this type of eating is something everyone can do?

Thanks a bunch

Instead of milk, how about adding a tiny amount of ghee or butter and make it a bullet proof tea? This would be more strategic from a keto perspective although it wouldn’t be endorsed by the IF purists.

Answer

To the question “can everyone do this type of eating?” (Barring any medical issues) I think everyone can do this type of eating (such as fasting without milk) with properly aligned priorities.

Currently, it sounds like you still prioritize the enjoyment of milk in the a.m. This is not a judgement and is neither bad nor good, just an observation.

I’m saying this to illustrate that “success” with this will be different for different people at different times in their life simply because different people at different periods are going to have different priorities and tolerances for changing their behavior.

I’d also mention that the amount of milk/cream used (or not) will make the difference between clean fasting vs dirty fasting vs not fasting at all.

I find it quite unsatisfying to drink mine black also! I’ve been practicing IF for over 3 weeks now with black tea but it’s consistently lackluster. I had hoped my tastebuds would adapt and I would learn to love it as I have with so many other foods and flavors. I suppose it could still happen, but hasn’t yet! Following this thread with interest.

Are you just doing IF to limit the amount of time you eat meals/snacks and lose some weight? If that’s the case, a small amount of milk in your tea is negligible and probably won’t hinder you that much (as long as it’s less than 50-100 calories I’d say). If you’re doing IF to improve insulin sensitivity, promote autophagy, etc, then that milk is a bigger deal and you’ll have to give it up.

To answer your last question, no I don’t think IF is for everyone, some people just don’t like it or it doesn’t fit in with their lifestyle and that’s ok

Answer

Presumably you started fasting for a reason. I would take time to really think about your “why”. The fasting method had a recent podcast on this. Think about your why in detail and what you want to achieve. If your why is strong enough then you’ll figure out that black tea, or coffee, or sparkling or regular water, is worth it for a few hours in the morning to achieve your goals. Try to stop thinking of it as depriving yourself and instead think this is how I live life now and what I need to do to get to where I want. Keep turning up every day, keep getting on the bandwagon when you fall off, and it really gets easier. I’m obese and just finished my first 45 hour water fast, if I had told myself this a year ago I would’ve fainted in surprise (then eaten a pack of cookies!). It really does become normal very quickly, keep at it!
