On the USDA’s website it says that 110g of an orange sweet potato is 95calories. Friedas (Stokes) says on their website that 110g of their purple sweet potato is 150calories. How is that possible? Stokes has to be wrong, correct? As there can’t be that much of a caloric difference between sweet potato varieties, correct?
They’re different varieties so comparing them as if they were different shapes of the same pasta isn’t the way to think about it. Different parts of the world produce different growth possibilities for the same vegetables too. Also, almost all artichokes in the US are grown in a singular chunk of California. I would seek more knowledge on veg.
Orange sweet potatoes are the most watery and therefore least calorically dense sweet potato.
Other varieties like Japanese sweet potatoes and Stokes sweet potatoes are MUCH more dense and starchy. You can tell just by baking them side-by-side. The orange ones tend to get a lot softer and ooze liquid, while the other varieties stay more firm and don’t release this same quantity of liquid.
It could be that the orange kind contains a lot more water per gram of potato, or more fiber, which would register as a lower amount of calories per gram.
Or maybe it’s the fact that you’re comparing a research-based food nutrition database to a food blog/reseller.
I personally believe calorie counting is a waste of time. Why? It’s not an exact science, not even close. There are too many variable which interact to get into a precise number and you’ll always end up with the problems like the on you’re now asking. Here’a s great infographic to explain why you shouldn’t try to count calories and what to do instead.

I prepare mine skin-on insta-pot prepared sweet potato (steamed, no calorie-added liquids or such). I do them in a batch for meal prep throughout the week. I use a food scale to weight prior to eating. I usually eat 4.3oz daily (which is about 1/2 of a sweet potato), which comes in at about 110 calories.
On the avocado front, 1/2 avocado (medium size) is about 120 calories.
