Tea, milk, sweetener - Fast Breaker?

Hey there.

So I’m having a 2nd attempt at 16:8 and wondered whether I need to break my habit of a lifetime in having a cup of tea with milk and sweetener as my first drink of the morning before I start the day.

Unsweetened fruit/green teas are an option for me if required.

I use the Zero app and wanted to know whether having this “morning cuppa” is technically cheating.

Just wanted to add that the progress pics many of you are posting are truly inspirational. Well done, and keep up the good work.

Thanks

Answer

Technically - yes, taking in calories is breaking the fast.

However, there are so many reasons that people fast and also everyone’s reactions to specific inputs is different. So whether its a problem for you is hard to say.

I’d say I’d you’re just getting started, either use your normal milk/sweetener and fast for 4-5 weeks and see if you get the results you want. If you’re not, switch to an alternative. OrTry the stricter route of cutting it out for 4-5 weeks, get used to fasting and how you feel, then try adding in the milk for a few weeks, then the sweetener. See if it changes how you feel/any progress toward your specific goals.

Answer

Is the tea during your fasting window? If so, you should try to eliminate the sweetener and milk and drink unsweetened green tea instead. Sweeteners (even some artificial sweeteners) can make fasting more difficult as they can increase cravings. Perhaps you can enjoy your lifetime tea w/milk as a way to break your fast and open your eating window.
