Third 36H Fast, woke up at 2am again, barely able to sleep afterwards

I’m not sure if there’s something I’m doing wrong but it’s my third 36 hour fast, the first one was perfect, the second and this one I wake up at about 2am (after 3 hours of sleep) and I have this strange feeling, It’s hard to fall back asleep and it feels like a hangover now.

Has anyone experienced this? Are there things I can try?

Answer

During the first 48 hours of a fast your body will enter a sympathetic dominated nervous tone (fight or flight). This is a normal response, eventually it will smooth itself out.

I’m not sure if you have a large caffeine consumption during your fasts but this can affect your circadian rhythm.

I would suggest 3-5 mg of melatonin (dual release if possible) prior to bed. If you’re able to take a warm shower or use a sauna prior to bed this will also aid in it. I also HIGHLY suggest magnesium glycinate or L-threonate @ around 600mg prior to bed. Magnesium acts as a relaxant to the blood vessels and musculature :)

Yep. It’s likely you in ketosis mode. I don’t have a perfect answer for you. I modified to OMAD with late afternoon /early evening meal. Seems to help my sleep patterns then occasionally switched back to ADF /weekly 48+ hours fast in a rotation. Maybe try MADF ?
