I recently just broke my 4 day fast on Saturday. The 4 day fast was surprisingly easy with minimal hunger pangs. I usually do OMAD so I thought it should be even EASIER after a 4 day fast (right?). Yesterday, I ate a salad and some nuts that came to 1350 calories. All ingredients were sugar free. I did have some diet soda while others were eating cake which might be the cause of my fast being so difficult today. Does soda have this effect on you?
When you say difficult do you mean you’re not losing the expected weight? Or that it makes you hungrier? Either way, the fake sugar in diet soda has been shown to raise insulin levels (not good) and as a result, your body goes into fat storing mode
Oh yeah, same here for me, it seems that sweetness, whether it comes from sugar or sugar alcohols/zero calorie sweeteners, has the same effect on me. I had some ice cream after my regular meal and it made it a bit harder the next day. Thank goodness it was a work day so I just focused on that as much as I could.
I think I can eat sweets here and there, but that’s something for the future and after I reached my goals, at this point it might be best to avoid them as much as possible.
Diet soda spikes insulin. Insulin tells your body that it has blood glucose available so it doesn’t burn fat. But there isn’t any sugar in diet soda so there wasn’t really any glucose available. At that point you would actually be hungry because your body would need food to function until insulin went down enough to start the fat burning process. If you didn’t eat anything and it couldn’t start burning fat, I don’t know what it was using as an energy source, but it seems unlikely that it was healthy.
Don’t consume fake sugar while fasting. It’s a really awful idea.
