I found that when I started ADF my first meal after my first 36hr fast went pretty rough. I felt nauseous for a good chunk of the day after that meal. From my longer fasting days I recognized the signs, too much food too fast.

For your next “fast breaking meal”, just bone broth or similar. Just start with that and you will in short order feel sated and ready for a real meal at your leisure. I needed to use bone broth for several more fasts to break them and then that was it. I have no issues anymore.

My guess is your body is used to producing stomach acid for a big meal, the shock of food after a 36hr fast seems to upset the balance as it were. It’s almost like your stomach is raw from being empty and lots of acid from meals you never ate but usually do. Perhaps the stomach lining is irritated, it’s more than likely.

Breaking a fast correctly early on in any new program is key, then quickly your body will adapt. I could break a 36hr fast with a bag of skittles now and I’d be fine (though, I would never do that 😅)

Anyhow, take heart I had the exact same issue after the exact same fast and your body will adjust. Until then some chicken soup or bone broth or anything light, just a cups worth to let your body prepare for the coming meal and you will be fine. Do this half an hour to an hour before eating and your first meal will go down really nicely.

I’m fairly new to fasting as well. I found the best way to break my fast is to have some soup (I use bone broth and then add a few things into it) and then slowly drink it out of my favourite big mug. I make the soup a little extra salty. Then I wait a bit before I eat anything else and it worked great!

I did not do that the first time I broke my first 24+ hour fast lol and I was in the bathroom for quite awhile. The soup stopped that, so wooo! It’s working for now.

People are going to tell you you ate too much. That you need a super light meal, but I beg to differ.

I think you should just push through. There’s no reason you should be feeling ill after a fast that short. It’s an overreaction by the body. It needs to be desensitized.

But hey, that’s just me.. If you feel like a lighter meal will help, go for it, if you constantly want to have to worry about what you’re eating after a fast that short that is.
