Weight gain after fasting

So I’m on a 7-day fast and I was just wondering will I put the weight back on after I begin eating again? Don’t get me wrong I’m not going to eat like a pig for the first few days I’m probably going to eat about 600 to 800 Cal to let my stomach re-adjust. And after that I’m still sticking to a caloric deficit. I’m just wondering what other people have experienced after breaking their fast with their weight

Answer

You can’t gain body fat on a calorie deficit. Don’t conflate scale weight with bodyfat.

That said, it is harder to put body fat on than take it off as in it takes more energy. You’re scale will jump back up after eating, but this is not putting on body fat, its water retention which is easily lost again quickly (hence why people get unreasonably excited about their initial “losses” when they start fasting).

If you are eating moderately, you will not put back on the body fat you lost.

Answer

If you break your fast and stay strict keto (under 30 grams net carbs per day), your weight gains will likely be minimal after the fast. You WILL regain water/waste weight, but a lot of the reason for water retention is carb intake and the liver/muscle glycogen stores. If you don’t give them any carbs, you will stay in fat adapted/fat burning mode and continue to lose weight assuming you eat at a reasonable deficit. I personally have been doing rolling 72s for the last week, and after my refeeds I might jump 1-2lbs at most, but within a day I’m usually back down to my pre-refeed weight and continue losing. Currently I’m down 12lbs in the last 7 days on rolling 72s, and I only gained 1.5ish lbs on my last refeed. I am however trying to keep to a pretty strict ketogenic refeed diet and give my body very little carb to keep it fat burning.
