Weight gain from fasting…?

I’ve been trying intermittent fasting for the last week, and right before I break my fast every day my weight has been consistently 0.2-0.4 higher than last. I’ve been drinking more water than I’ve ever drank in my life and have been eating ~1800 calories a day. Just confused as to why I’m going up

Answer

It’s best to weigh yourself right after waking up and peeing, and before drinking anything.

And make sure you’re actually eating at a caloric deficit. If you’re not losing weight, most of the time it’s because you’re just overeating and may not even realize it.

And don’t worry too much about day to day fluctuations in your weight. It happens. Make sure you pick one day a week as your official weigh in day and use that for tracking.

Our weight can go up and down few pounds a day for many reasons I think salt is of the bigest factors. More salt in our diet more water we retain. I weigh my self every day and I’m up and down all the time. Actually I’m stuck for almost 3 months now @ about 190🙁. But I when I was loosing weigh I would only mark my weight if it was lower then the one marked before. Just keep with it it works. I wish I took pick at my heaviest to see how I changed. But I never thought I could keep up with it and that I would loose 40lb in few months.

Hi, since you’ve been doing this for a week it’s not really a good idea to weigh yourself everyday. I made the same mistake and got really discouraged. Some people see results instantly but not everyone does. Plus your weight fluctuates every day based on hormones, water retention, etc so small changes should be ignored.

Also, I gained a kilo somehow in my first couple of weeks on IF before I actually started losing weight so just give your body some time to sort through the changes

Answer

One week is far too short of a window to make any assessment on weight loss effectiveness with IF.

The first month of getting going on IF is all about getting the process down. Getting in the groove of eating to your calorie limits as well as nailing your fasting windows. Stick to the plan for the next couple weeks. Take your weight every day at the same time. Usually when you first get up. Then keep a 7 or 10 day running average of your weight. Only look at that average for how you’re doing. Daily weights fluctuate too much. I like 10 day averages because it really smooths out the fluctuations to where I can see the overall trend.

Whatever your daily calorie deficit is, divide it by 3,500 and that will tell you what you should be losing every day on average. Again, look at your rolling average and see how much that is going down every day over time.
