Weird pain in abs and diarrhea during water fast

Started what was supposed to be a 5-7 day water fast for the sake of autophagy to hopefully improve some autoimmune symptoms I was experiencing but it didn’t go to plan.

On day 2, I had some exogenous ketones to get my energy up. Worked brilliantly for that and mind was crystal clear. However, I became extremely flush in the face. That is also when the diarrhea started.

I cut out the BHB salts middle of day 3 but the diarrhea kept going on into day 4.

I was staying extremely hydrated throughout each day and added an electrolyte powder to my water that covers the spectrum of all possible minerals. I use it regularly when not fasting at the start of my day. No caffeine or other diuretics.

On day 3, I also started experiencing a strange pain in the right lower quadrant of my abs. It felt like it was between the skin and muscle. A bit further up on the right but still below my rib cage I felt stabbing tension within my gut that lingered most of the day. This then progressed to stabbing pains shooting throughout my left lower quadrant that felt like it was both in my gut and again between the skin and muscle of my transverse abdominals. The skin was tender to the touch.

I’ve done 5 day water fasts twice before and never had any of these symptoms. The pain and tenderness where skin meets muscle was especially bizarre.

The discomfort kept getting worse to the point that at the end of the 4th day I broke my fast with some bone broth.

No history of liver issues or gallstones. Have had both checked recently and labwork looks perfect. No IBS symptoms.

Never had diarrhea while fasting, but have heard of it happening. Maybe the BHB salts caused some sort of cascade where my body couldn’t get out of diarrhea mode?

Also concerning is what was that pain at the junction of skin and muscle…some sort of referral pain from another organ?

All of this resolved within hours of breaking my fast.

Answer

Does your ketone supplement have mct oil by chance? That or excess sodium could cause the skits. If I were you I’d break the fast. Muscle spasms could be a sign of electrolyte deficiency caused by the skits.
