Weird Weight Loss Patterns

Does anyone else lose weight in odd patterns? I will go like a full week with no changes at all. Maybe max a fraction of a pound. Then suddenly I will have a period of rapid loss. Ranging from .5 to 2 pounds over night.

I’m assuming that it’s water weight or some other thing causing it to take a while to show up on the scale. Just wondering if anyone else experiences things like this.

It’s totally normal for weight loss to be non-linear.

Answer

hour-by-hour weight loss tracking is gonna drive you absolutely crazy.

Whether you’re trying to lose weight or not, your weight can fluctuate 5 pounds in a day easily.

I’m not trying to lose weight right now, i’m maintaining, and two nights ago I went to bed weighing 213 and did nothing but pee once in the night. I woke up weighing 210. Was I exactly the same? Yes. So that’s water weight.

As your’e going and trying to lose weight, you need to set a weekly weighin or something. The you can plan for that to be weigh in day. That means the night before you don’t eat bad chinese with a bunch of MSG in it, or an entire pizza with all that salt. Regular day, regular boring diet food. Then, that’s your number for the week. And don’t make it be a number after you’ve sat in a sauna of an hour or ran 5 miles. Post pee, with poop being irrelevant (in my experience, poop weighs less than the coffee you drink to induce the poop out).

But yeah, odd patterns. People will reference the “whoosh” effect. There are some of the numbers (like say 274) that I never recorded that I was during the diet. One day I was 276 and then one day later I was 273. Those three pounds whooshed away.
