I understand the benefits of local veggies and fruit. And in season also makes sense, but I’ve also heard that growing in greenhouses works just as well. But could you technically not grow almost anything in a greenhouse and at any time? Wouldn’t that sort of the defeat the purpose of buying “in season”? What else am I missing here
I’d imagine the nutrient profile could vary a lot depending on how it’s been grown. Just the decline in nutrient density in the soil over the last 100 years has plummeted the content of certain nutrients in fruit
Generally, food that’s in season usually has to travel less distance to get to you and by extension, tends to be fresher/better. It also may or may not be cheaper depending on how it got to you, what you buy and where you live. Ideally, you could pick your fruits and veggies right off the vine and eat them right there.
I don’t know much about Greenhouses, but it would seem to me that your limiting factors would be that certain crops grow best in certain temperatures/climates/places because those conditions only exist at certain times of the year. Unless you have a reliable way to consistently replicate those conditions inside your greenhouse, I don’t think you can grow anything you want whenever you want.
