Unless you’re trying to gain weight or bulk, there’s really no reason to drink things other than water. From a nutritional standpoint. But human nature factors in, and it’s hard for some of us to drink nothing but room temp water all day. I’m a fan of the little squeeze drink enhancers, sugar free and they often have B-vitamins which don’t hurt. My SO has a SodaStream and drinks mostly just carbonated water with it, which is better because there are no artificial sweeteners.

Your body will get water out of whatever you drink, and your body will filter out and digest the rest. So for instance, drink 8 ounces of OJ and your body will get something like 7.8oz water and the a bunch of sugar and maybe a little pulp which makes up the missing weight. Some of the efficiency is lost because your body needs to use some of that water to process the sugar through your cells, but you still gain liquid in the process.

But, again, unless you’re bulking or carb loading, you wouldn’t want that sugar. Or, really, most of the things you might add to water.

Exceptions would include black coffee, tea, and fermented drinks like kambucha which can in fact convey benefits beyond mere hydration.
