What happens if I go over my 1g protein per lb?

I read somewhere that if you go over your recommended protein intake or too much protein it can mess with you kidneys and be bad for you. I’m currently at 20gs over my current recommendation

Answer

Excess protein is bad for kidneys that are already compromised. Excess protein with normal functioning kidneys is filtered and excreted. If your kidneys are ok, then eating excess protein isn’t going to compromise then.

Answer

Kidney damage from eating protein and dehydration occurs over time, doing this once or even for a short period will be absolutely fine! Someone with more knowledge can expand on this maybe. I’m thinking mainly of kidney stones.

Answer

You can eat a shitload of protein everyday and still have healthy kidneys. People think protein is some magical macronutrient, but it’s just like the others. Yes, protein is very important for your health and producing hormones, tissues, etc., but if you’re eating a western diet, you’re already having more than enough of it, and the negative consequences of that are going to be excess calories and weight gain, not kidney damage.

May I ask where you read what you say you read in your post? There’s a ton of misinformation out there and it would just be helpful to know if where you read it was a reputable source.

That way I could help you and provide a more effective response for you! :)

Thanks!

Answer

Nothing that is a myth if you are staying properly hydrated. .8 - 1.2g/lb is recommended dosage. Science says 35-50g per serving. Whatever your body doesn’t absorb can be used for fat loss as protein has a high thermic effect. 1g is common and usually plenty for the average person.

Answer

It’s actually an old school of thought and of course eating just protein is too much, but eating more than 1g/lb weight the body either excretes through urine (which is why drinking plenty of water is so important) and if over on calories, extra cals will get stored as fat. But as long as you are drinking plenty of water, here is no issue with going over. There is also no extra benefits in going over either. Studies show that going beyond the 1g rule doesn’t do much in terms of helping build muscle.

Answer

I don’t have the time to research this in depth so I’m not going to answer the question….but I think you should take some time to do so on your own and not rely on any of these answers. We don’t know your overall caloric intake or needs, where your getting your protein, or a lot of other relevant information to answer the question. I’d avoid any information from people promoting a keto diet because there’s a ton on misinformation out there. There are also a lot of flat out incorrect statements in these answers. You don’t just pee out excess protein for example. It gets turned into fat like any other excess calories.
