This happens quite often! It’s something that potentially can trip me up during my weight loss journey.
I’ll be 30 hours deep into a fast, and then I’ll be offered some food. My roommate might offer to cook me breakfast, or I’ll be over at a friend’s house and they offer me some dinner(and a couple of alcoholic drinks along with it.)
I never know what to do, except politely decline because I have goals I need to meet. I’m thinking that might be the only way to handle it.
Does anyone else have this happen when they are fasting? I’d love to hear if you have any additional strategies.
Depends.
Oh no thank you. –usually works. Don’t have to get into things.
Oh, I’m okay now, maybe I can take some for later? Thanks.
Oh, I’m not hungry. Thanks.
Oh I’m not eating right now. Thanks.
Oh I’m on a fast right now. Thanks.
Oh, I’m fasting. Thanks.
Oh, I’m fasting until X, so I won’t be eating. Thanks.
First rule I have is not to burden others. So it’s okay if you’ve mentioned it before and they forget sometimes etc.
For people who are acquaintances, I typically give little information about why. Ending things with thanks usually stops people from pressing.
For people who are closer I’ll explain what I’m doing, sometimes why, and when I eat so they can be better accommodating if they care to be. But only if I want to.
With your roommate it should be easy; “please don’t do that (offers of food) while I’m fasting”. That should suffice unless they are socially tone deaf enough to think it is funny to do just that, at which point you have to be more clear about it.
Visiting family can be a bit trickier but you can always develop an ongoing stomach problem. “Sorry, can’t, unless you want me to nuke your bathroom”. It doesn’t need to be that colorful but you get the idea.
Sometimes it is just better to fast around your life than living around your fast.
I just tell people I’m fasting to combat my pre-diabetics. People seem to be respectful when you throw in a health condition like that lol. Occasionally people would ask “can’t it wait until tomorrow?” And I just tell them no.
