When does basal metabolic rate actually drop?

Ive been doing weekly 72hr fasts for a few weeks in conjunction with a low carb-whole food diet and I’m absolutely loving it and am getting closer to my weight loss/fitness goals.

I’m interested in trying a longer fast (7 days maybe?) but I always thought the general consensus was that your metabolism slows down after 72 hours of no food and you transition into a sort of long-term food scarcity mode.

But now I’m seeing people talk about 10, 20, or even 40 day fasts with no real consequences. Are my assumptions incorrect? I’m having trouble finding actual data on this.

Thanks!

Answer

This is a myth for all practical purposes. Forget about “starvation mode” and your metabolism slowing down preventing weight loss. It’s mostly bullshit, lots of studies to back this up. Keep fasting and disregard the notion.
