Whenever I get to around the 24 hour mark in a fast I start to feel anxious—is this normal?

So yeah, as the title says, whenever I’m nearing the 24 hour mark I feel like my heart rate elevates and I just generally feel anxious.

As soon as I eat something the problem basically goes away.

Is this all in my head? Do I just have to “think it away”? Or could it be related to electrolyte depletion (today I walked and jogged 8km outside in temperatures nearing a hundred degrees Fahrenheit)?

Answer

TL;DR: Adrenaline is a key contributor to burning fat.

So, what is your typical Fight or Flight response look like when you’re body is flooded with adrenaline? Does it make your feel anxious in the same way?

The reason I ask is because about 10 hours after your last insulin response your body starts secreting hormones designed to draw energy out of fat stores for fuel. Specifically, HGH (Human Growth Hormone), testosterone and adrenaline.

If the energy pulled into the blood in the form of fatty-acids by these hormones aren’t used, it insulin is released again, these fatty acids are returned to fat cells.
