Why can’t I break a fast with bread as part of the meal?

I understand that too many carbs (especially sugary snacks like sweets and doughnuts) are horrendously unhealthy.

What I’d like to know is if there is any evidence that breaking a 36 hour fast with bread is so bad? Especially relatively fresh bread with a healthy protein/fat like chicken or eggs.

As long as the food is chewed well and mushed up by the enzymes in your mouth that get carbs ready for digestion I don’t see the problem personally. I’ve broken my most recent 2 fasts with bread and eggs without a problem.

Answer

You can. I do.

It spikes your insulin and breaks you out of ketosis. Which takes time to get going if you are starting to fast again. So if you eat a keto-focused meal it will be more productive

Some things may be easier or harder to digest.for some particularly after a long fast. I’ve never really had an issue.

I’ve included fresh sourdough or French bread when breaking many a fast, though usually following a high intensity workout. I’m avoiding on this go ‘round because, as someone else said, if you eat enough to boot you out of ketosis, you spend more time in the next fast getting back into it, which diminishes time spent burning fat somewhat.

When i ate bread with my meals, i will say that i did not get the explosive bathroom visit post meal, so there is that.

You just have to choose what will keep you compliant, imo. If taking the bread out meant somehow that you wouldn’t have the motivation to fast, then keep it in there. I’m going to add it back once I’m on more of a maintenance track
