For weight loss, I understand because you’re consuming 0 calories from them. But for autophagy, aren’t you still making your stomach work from digesting and thus your body is inhibited in restoring cells?
Nothing to do with GI system having to work…it has to do with need to eat oneself for sustenance
The hope is that your body consumes the low hanging fruit first (cancer cells, misfolded proteins, extra skin cells)….
You don’t digest liquids like coffee or soda. Those will go right through you. Gatorade did studies long ago about how quick the drink entered the bloodstream. It’s under 10 minutes if I remember right for gatorade which is essentially a sugar drink with some electrolytes. MCT oils supposedly bypass digestion as well.
This subreddit has a variety of people if you read the posts/comments. The people doing long fasts more for dieting tend to do a more dirty fast. They will take in some calories and even some solids but in some amounts. Some say these people are more just severe calorie restriction. The purists in here going for autophagy essentially abstain from everything but water. It really just depends on what your goals are and how you approach it.
I’m of the opinion diet soda does break as I’m not sure there isn’t an insulin response despite 0 cal. Coffee is known to not trigger insulin. That said, for some, technically breaking allows them to stay in large insulin free caloric deficits for long times (e.g., bulletproof coffee) so do what works for you.
Diet soda is definitely a no-no. Seeet taste in the mouth can trigger an insulin response.
Black coffee seems to be more of a grey area. Caffeine has been said to enhance autophagy, but some people don’t process coffee or caffeine well.
Protein is the main thing that breaks autophagy. That is why you can have mct oil in your coffee and it doesnt spike insulin because there is no sugars and doesnt stop autophagy because no protein.
Diet soda is a grey area and to be honest it is literally battery acid. I dont go near that garbage.
