Why is my period coming back???

I am 21/F and am finishing up day 3 of a water fast in hopes of breaking food addiction. Im aiming for a week at least; this is my first true water fast. I’m normal weight right now and have not had a cycle for the past 4 years (save one time this past December). I have had bloodwork done and hormones/other stuff was normal. I just found very light blood coming out of me. Of all times for it to come back, why now???

It’s known that fasting in women can cause hormonal disruption. I don’t have any sources to cite, but you can read about it if you google it. Keto diets can do it at times too. Are you on any hormonal contraceptives? Certain ones like Depo provera and the Mini Pill can cause you to not get periods, though I’m assuming your dr went over that with you.

This happens to me a lot, and from what I’ve read, this is the reason. Estrogen is often stored in fat cells, and when those fat cells are used up for energy, the estrogen is released, which can sometimes trigger spotting or even a full-on period. Sorry if I have it wrong; this is just how I understood it.

Answer

My periods are more drawn out and heavier when I’m consistently fasting. For instance, my last period lasted 10 days. Not fun, but worth it for me to lose the weight. You’re not alone in having strange cycles while fasting!
