Why no % daily value for total sugars?

I was talking with my wife about how now total sugars, and added sugars are listed separately on nutrition labels to give consumers more of an idea of how healthy a product is.

I grabbed milk out of the fridge to show her, but then realized that for total sugars there isn’t a percentage recommended daily intake, but there is for added sugars.

When I googled to see how much total sugars is recommended, I could only find amounts for added sugars.

Why is that?

Answer

All evidence points towards natural sugars being fine/healthy, and all added sugar being bad.

So it would be impossible to set a good on total sugars. The current guidelines of avoiding added sugar is a million times better than any guidelines on total sugar.

>No Daily Reference Value has been established for Total Sugars because no recommendations have been made for the total amount to eat in a day. Keep in mind that the Total Sugars listed on the Nutrition Facts label include naturally occurring sugars (like those in fruit and milk) as well as Added Sugars.

Answer

That’s because there’s no point worrying about natural sugar intake from wholefoods like fruit and veg and milk, a dv hasn’t been assigned because it wouldn’t benefit people health to have them eating less of these healthy things due to an artificial limitation on natural sugars.Due to the food matrix and fibre, sugar in whole fruit and veg is nothing to worry abt and sugar in milk won’t effect you like table sugar as there’s protein with it and milk is much less sugar dense than added sources of sugar. Due to this it wouldn’t be beneficial to limit natural unadulterated sugars in tge same way added sugar should be limited.
