Answer

Ultimately it comes down to how strict of a faster you want to be, and what you’re fasting for, more than it’s a physiological one.

If you’re fasting for specific health or religious reason, probably stick to just water. If you’re fasting for general wellness, black coffee, tea, etc. If you’re fasting for weight loss, there’s an argument that almost anything that gets you to your next meal without eating is worth it.

The body isn’t just big switches that get thrown on and off, it’s more dials being adjusted. So among the later camps there’s a rule that anything under 50 calories won’t create enough of a response from the body to kick up insulin.

Some folks also find mixed results with artificial sweeteners, either having them spike insulin, making them hungry, or being totally fine.

You can always try it for a little while and make changes if you’re not getting the results you want.

I started IF January 1st, I enjoy my coffee in the AM. I am gradually lowering the extras I add, trying to get it down to black. I used to drink it with 3 T sugar free sweetener and 3 packets Splenda. I’ve come down to two of each. Next time I taper down it’ll be one of each. Will probably also spend the money for a really great roast. My grocery store basic coffee will probably never be truly yummy for me all by its lonesome.

I have always had a soy milk flat white with collagen powder added in every morning and still see great results.

It helps get me through until my eating window starts, and sorts out the hunger cue I get first thing in the morning. Probably not traditional fasting, but it works 🤷🏻‍♀️
