Answer

The studies on this are all over the place.

Diet soda has no calories. So, if you go by calories, the answer is no.

Some studies indicate that it causes “insulin confusion”.

IME, it triggers appetite.

In general, this subject is polarizing.

Answer

I’m in this camp too. I think an IF lifestyle really complements clean eating (given the small window you have too get your nutrients in), which is as good a reason as any to lose the soda.

That said, if diet soda is what’s making fasting tolerable for you, might as well stick with it and see what your results are.

Answer

It doesn’t trigger blood sugar but it does trigger an insulin response. Since insulin is a big regulator of body set point weight I would not drink it on a fast. I learned this recently from Dr Fung’s “The Obesity Code.”

I’ve been stuck at about 30lbs overweight for a few years and my main reason for fasting is to help reduce my bodie’s “set point weight” to a lower level. Previously I would just count calories but that did not work for me since I couldn’t stick to it. Fasting has started to work and if I understand it right it has everything to do with insulin, reduced hunger, and obviously simply consuming less calories.

Answer

Ahh, we opening Pandora’s box again, are we?

I don’t consider it breaking a fast. If diabetics can drink it and not affect their blood sugar, why would it affect mine? Though I generally do feel better when I stay away.

Answer

So I know diet soda says no calories, but i remember correctly there are calories just not enough that require them to report it.

If you’re doing weight maintenance you’re probably good. If you’re focused on weight loss I wouldn’t until you hit that goal weight, or maybe keep it to once a week or something.

Answer

If we consider the emotional aspect of eating, I think fasting is a chance to stay mentally away from food and other foodstuff. It’s like saying to your brain “see, we can survive without food for a bit” and gradually it helps you have a more balanced approach to food. Now, considering this aspect, would a diet coke help or hinder this process? The answer is subjective, IME it would.

Answer

Yes absolutely. Unless by “diet soda” you mean plain carbonated water which means you have a soda machine, club soda, or mineral water (Perrier, Pellegrino, etc). Or you can skirt by with the “diet soda” by squeezing some lemon juice and/or apple cider vinegar and/or pinch of salt to carbonated water (soda water).
