Fibre while fasting

The brown flair is particularly topic-appropriate…

Last time I did IF I had to stop due to… butt problems. It’s hard to get all the fibre I needed in 1 or 2 meals. It also seems like I need fibre intake regularly throughout the day. So for about 6 months now, I take metamucil every morning (bye, butt problems!) But not that I’m fasting I wonder if the maltodextrun in the sugarfree metamucil is breaking my fast. I’ve also increased my dose and take it morning and night to stay regular when I’m not eating so often.

Anyone have experiences with using fibre supplements while intermittent fasting? Does it break your fast? Is there a different brand/product that is IF friendly?

Answer

I am inconclusive in my own research as to whether or not metamucil breaks a fast .. even though it’s sugar free.

The fibre won’t give you an insulin spike, but the fake sweetener might. What I tend to do is just have a glass of metamucil about half an hour before my first meal, and if im intending on having more than one glass of metamucil that day, i’ll have it again about a half an hour before my last meal. I try not to over think it, and I try not to stay on metamucil for too long, as your body may adapt to ‘requiring’ it to process its waste.

I believe the product recommends that although you can have it at any time of the day, a short time before your meal is best for results and I suspect this may be the case especially if you are IF’ing

Additionally, I would make sure to drink lots of water with it, it solidifies really quickly and if you aren’t having enough water, I personally find that it can assist in backing you up

There might be specific foods that work well with your body and metabolism. In my case after a rough first couple of weeks, I’ve taken to finishing my meal with a serving or two of peanuts or cashews. My body seems to process them as if they contain much more fiber than they do on-label, and exhaust becomes much easier.

I haven’t tried Almond Milk, which in the past has made me exhaust meals I hadn’t even eaten yet! Since your intake is much lower, you may be able to tolerate some things that didn’t work for you in the past.

Why do you need fiber? Also for some reason you keep spelling it fibre. Psyllium husk doesn’t have added sweetener like metamucil. Fiber can actually cause straining and constipation. It is possible to be healthy on a zero fiber diet and that can be the best for some people.

Fiber isn’t essential for life or health.
