Fasting and gout

Hi my husband and I have fasted on occasion I’ve done up to two weeks and he usually stops at four or five days. Well my daughter just got married this past weekend and he was on his feet a lot and drinking a lot with family and now he’s got a bad gout flareup in his feet and toes. So water fasting good for gout or bad for gout? I would think ketosis would increase uric acid so bad for gout …right ….what do we think?

Answer

Interestingly enough there is a study of Ramadan fasting’s effects on gout. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25275760/ Long story short, fasting for just a day or two has no measurable effect

However, like you said, long term fasting can raise uric acid levels in the blood, which can lead to gout attacks. Especially if you get dehydrated.
