What snacking fruits/vegetables have the longest non-refrigerated life?

I’m going to the field for 8 days and really want to stay as far away from MRE’s and highly processed foods as I can. What vegetables/fruits can I bring with me to snack on? Any advice or suggestions would help!

Answer

Almost anything that you find unrefridgerated at the market. Buy unripe fruit and eat them in order. I’ve had bananas, tomatoes, apples, pears, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, olives out for days and it was fine. I know it’s not a fruit/vegetables but hard cheeses can also stay out for over a week.

Answer

You can freeze fruits and vegetables but that can alter the taste a bit / be a hassle to thaw. Also: do not fear highly processed foods. Its not healthy to think that way. Most are high in calories on very small amounts, and that is essentially their main “drawback”.

Very good idea to eat more fruits and veggies. Very BAD idea to demonize highly processed food.
