Abnormal ketones

I’ve been doing IF for the last month. A few days ago I had bloodwork done and my ketones were listed as abnormal. Is that to be expected?

Answer

It is possible to have elevated levels of ketones in your body while intermittent fasting, especially during the early stages of fasting. This is because during fasting, your body may shift from burning glucose for energy to burning stored fat for energy, which can produce ketones as a byproduct. However, having moderate or even high levels of ketones in the body during fasting is generally considered normal and safe for healthy individuals.

You should talk to your doctor about it and explain you are IF and how long you’ve been doing it to see if it’s cause for concern.
