Calcium fortified plant milks

I’ve read that calcium supplements are likely to be harmful. Yet the RDI for calcium is something like 1300mg.

Is the calcium from plant milks going to have the same negative effects as taking a calcium supplement? Calcium has to be added to plant milks apparently, it doesn’t occur naturally in these milks. So I’m curious if that would have the same negative effects as taking a calcium supplement.

Answer

Anything fortified is the equivalent to a supplement. and calcium supplements aren’t generally considered harmful. it’s best to ensure adequate consumption or supplementation of calcium rather not getting enough. otherwise you may have some serious bone related problems down the line.

but soy milk is generally a great well rounded plant milk.

the risk with every supplement is dosage generally way higher amounts and more “concentrated” then food.

Answer

In my degree we were taught that fortified foods are not the same as supplements. In New Zealand (where I live and did my BSc in Human Nutrition) we do not recommend calcium supplementation, even under medical guidance, but we do recommend that if you’re going to use plant milks you use calcium fortified ones.
