Coffee Intake

In my hope of not embarrassing myself. I recently started keeping track of my water intake and it seems like people will include unsweetened and plain herbal teas as part of their water intake. Does that same rule apply to coffee? I drink a venti iced decaf americano everyday and I have not been counting this as water intake. But I’m wondering if I could… any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated!

Answer

I don’t think it would be a good idea to consume an entire 64 ounces of coffee per day in the name of “water” intake. Or any type of tea either. If it’s not actual water, it’s going to affect your body in non-water ways. (For example, coffee and many teas, even if they are decaf, are acidic and can cause GERD.)

But it seems perfectly reasonable to count a single morning decaf towards your total hydration. Of course, if you are adding sugar, creamer or milk, you should also be counting that towards your food/calorie intake.

Answer

Yes apparently it can be counted as part of your fluid intake but you should have a glass of water when you get up to replenish fluids before coffee as the oils and substances can cause irritation if it’s the first fluid you have. I like that it doesn’t technically break my fast
