Early breakfast vs intermittent fasting?

I remember years ago it was recommended to eat breakfast every day to get your metabolism going. Now there is a trend towards intermittent fasting, for example eating only between 12 and 8. Since this would skip at least one of the standard meals, does that mean it would slow the metabolism? Also does metabolism in this context mean, essentially, your BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate)?

In this study iooks like Time Restricted Feeding did not affect BMR but it did lead to better fat loss.

BTW even though in popular lingo, this is called “intermittent fasting” in technical journal what you are doing will be characterized as late-time-restricted-feeding.

As someone who practices IF full time it annoys the crap out of me when people refer to IF as “skipping meals”.

I count calories and macros. I have minimums that I have to hit every day for training and to maintain body weight.

Me doing IF does not in any way change my food intake. I still have multiple meals a day. I just simply eat them at different times.

This is what is frustrating about the societal views around food, diet, and any type of dietary restriction. We have to turn all forms of dietary restriction that isn’t ours into some negative word form.

So if someone doesn’t eat before noon they are automatically skipping meals and starving themselves. Which you almost certainly didn’t mean by your statement, but that’s EXACTLY how it’s perceived.

I practice no sense of nutritional depravity and I don’t skip meals.

There is no scientific validation to the claim that eating soon after waking increases BMR. Just because that was a commonly held belief doesn’t make it scientifically accurate.
