IF for more than a year, but still confused about hunger cues!

Hey, oddball question here. I’ve been doing IF for more than a year now, but hunger still confuses me.

I’m not hungry or suffer from cravings at all, even from my favorites, unless I think I’m allowed to eat–ie, I choose to put something in my mouth or decide “Well, it’s Saturday, I don’t need to sit in an office today, I think I’ll have a healthy breakfast” or something similar. That is convenient but seems odd.

If I don’t eat anything for breakfast (I do have a tablespoon of cream in a double-shot of black espresso each morning) then I can pretty much ignore food entirely until whenever I get back to my home kitchen, which triggers the “Yay, it’s 5:30, time to make dinner!” feelings and I’ll munch some celery or a soft-boiled egg or something while I prep dinner.

I don’t get ‘full’ very easily. I don’t really experience satiety or fullness. I usually stop when I feel like I can stop myself, not when I want to stop. It’s okay though, I don’t feel resentful about it, I just wish it was more clear when I’ve had enough food.

Also odd, if I do eat almost anything for breakfast then I feel hungry throughout the day, completely unlike my fasting schedule. Or at least what feels like hunger, I think? Today I went to a meet-and-greet thing at my kid’s school, and they had donuts and coffee. I love donuts but had no cravings, thank goodness. I did have one tiiiny sip of my wife’s oatmilk canned coffee, just to see what it was like since she said it was pretty good and we might want to get some for her busier mornings. I’ve been hungry all day since! It’s half past noon, hours and hours since that miniscule sip. It’s absurd. I felt pretty fine as long as I was drinking water, but now my water bottle is empty, which never happens, and I’m just annoyed at the situation.

I’ll go get food if I have to but eating here is so unpleasant. Fast food is gross. Eating is a cozy time and work is not cozy.

So I’m really confused about hunger cues currently.

Why am I still hungry hours after just a tiny sip when normally I’m totally fine, even around food? Why when I do eat do I never feel ‘done’ eating, or even ‘full’ like I don’t have more space? Why does food sound unappealing right now, despite the fact that I feel ‘hungry’ sorta?

Baffling and annoying. I’m going to go brew some herbal tea and take a walk.

Answer

If you have something with sugars or starches, you’re going to trigger an insulin response, which boosts ghrelin (the hunger hormone). That’s why you can do your cream and coffee (mostly protein and fat) without cravings later, but oatmilk or sweet things will have you “starving” in a few hours.
