Answer

The shear amount of advertising the company does has me leery of the product. Good products sell themselves… moreover, the advertising costs are being passed on to the costumer. Go somewhere else for supplements, or just make a smoothie with the same ingredients

I bought it, but then a number of things had me feeling like they’re dodgy as heck.

First they use a propiety blend. Apparently this is a red flag for greens powders as you can’t tell how much of any ingredients in the drink, and some of them do have active doses, like reishi mushrooms for example or ashwagandha.

Second, I ask them if they could let me know how much ashwagandha and rhodiola was in the powder and their response was so shady, they said;

‘Ren here from Athletic Greens Customer Happiness Team!

If you can please keep the information to yourself we can confirm for you that there is less than 2g per serving of Ashwagandha in AG.

Our Rhodiola Rosea Root Dry Extract has a ratio 15:1. Being a 15:1 every 1mg of Rhodiola root dry extract used in our formula is the equivalent of 15mg of fresh Rhodiola root.We are not able to provide the exact amount of Eleuthero that is contained in our proprietary blend. Due to some pretty heavy competition out there, we prefer to keep this information confidential.’

To which I said;

‘Of course there is less than 2g, there’s only 2.7g per serving of all ingredients within that section. Less than 2g could be 1mg.

This answer seems more shady than illuminating. Not sure the competition would really matter, the only criticism I see of AG is that you don’t specify the amount for your ingredients in your proprietary blend. Even your mushroom complex is lower in total than the active amount for reishi found in studies.’

So, in all they seem dishonest and yet sell themselves as super superior. A large number of what you pay for is likely doing 0 to your body, and there seems to be no real benefit over a green powder half the price. Their marketing hype is certainly successful. You want something a bit more transparent.

There’s gonna be someone that spews the annoying old “eat real food!!!”

yeah we get it but life gets in the way and sometimes you’re short on time and will. Yes we should maximize whole foods but we can also use supplements to fill in the gaps. Also green powders are usually just freeze dried and ground up, it’s not that much different from the whole food version.

I think athletic greens are worth it because cheaper brands source their sea veggies like spirulina from China that has higher heavy metal content.
